Résumé :

Amir est pachtoune et fils du maître, quand Hassan, fils du serviteur, appartient à l'ethnie hazara, dominée et opprimée depuis toujours. En 1975, à l'occasion du traditionnel tournoi de cerfs-volants, tout bascule : Amir assiste, passif, à une terrible agression à l'encontre de Hassan. Rongé de culpabilité et honteux de sa lâcheté, il préférera, perfide, l'accuser à tort et l'éloigner de lui. Quand des années plus tard, le fils de son ancien ami se trouve en grand danger aux mains des Talibans, nouveaux maîtres du pays, Amir voit là l'occasion de racheter sa faute et de mettre un terme à la culpabilité qui le ronge. Face aux démons du passé, il n'est pourtant pas aisé de trouver la voie de la rédemption…

Like atonement, another film where a child marks the destiny of a close person. This child becomes a writer. In kite runner the child gets a chance later.

Amir, who now lives in America and is on his way to become a successful writer, wants to return to Afghanistan to find a child after he gets a call from a family friend. When he is preparing his return, his mind lingers back to his youth. A flashback recalls his childhood life as a spoiled child, growing up in monarchical Afganisthan. With his friend, Hassan (the son of his father's servant), he spends his days in a peaceful Kabul, kite fighting and being street boys. When something awful happens to Hassan, Amir feels uncomfortable about him, and betrays him. When later Soviet forces invade the country and he flees with his father via Pakistan to the US, Hassan stays behind and suffers. When Amir decides to return to Afganistan, now under Taliban regime, he hopes to find forgiveness for choices he made when he was young.
Recommended. When I saw it in the US, some peole in the audience cried and others applauded when the film was over.
